Southeast Asian Language Program
Ohio University
2009-2010
The Department of Linguistics at Ohio University, in collaboration with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, offers language instruction in various Southeast Asian languages and levels, including Indonesian, Khmer, Thai and Vietnamese. Indonesian has been offered at Ohio University since 1970. Today Ohio University offers beginning, intermediate and advanced Indonesian. Thai has been taught continuously since 1999 and is available at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Both languages fulfill the undergraduate language requirement for the College of Arts & Sciences. Khmer and Vietnamese are offered at the beginning and intermediate levels.
The instructors of the Southeast Asian languages are native speakers and have
experience in language instruction. More importantly, the language courses are
dynamic and multifaceted. All the courses are based on the performance and
strategy-based teaching model. Instruction embraces all aspects of language:
speaking, listening, reading and writing. Apart from focusing on developing the
students' language skills, the students are encouraged to examine subjects
related to culture, history, literature, politics, and so on. Extra curriculum
activities are arranged to provide ample opportunities for students to learn, be
exposed to Southeast Asian culture, and interact with the other members from the
region. The activities range from the Southeast Asian Ghost Tales event,
Southeast Asian Poetry Night, Southeast Asian Night Market, and Southeast Asian
Karaoke Night.
The Southeast Asian language program has successfully prepared students for
further studies at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) in
Madison-Wisconsin, and various in-country intensive language programs, including
the Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay (COTIM) and the
Consortium for the Advancement of the Study of Thai (AST). In addition, each
year students tested for proficiency by qualified instructors accredited by the
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
