Sok Udom Deth From Cambodia, Dom’s focus is on Cambodian History. He earned his bachelor degree in Sociology at Bogazici University – Turkey, 2006. His future career plan is teaching Southeast Asian history at a university. He said that ‘awesome, sarcastic, humble’ are the best three words to describe him self. His hobbies are soccer, table tennis, music, watching comedies. He recommends people to visit Angkor Wat, one of the coolest places to see in Cambodia.
Christina Lees From Chicago, Chiristina’s focus is on terrorism in SEA. Her undergrad was from Baldwin-Wallace College. She also joined Study Abroad program (Semester at SEA) and worked as an Intern at Institute of International Education – Washington, D.C. She describes herself as ‘funny, energetic, and intelligent.' For her future career plan, she wants to work at a US government office.
Matthew Minarcheck Matt will be a Fulbright fellow 2009-10. His focus is on Indonesia, especially development, NGOs, and rural communities. He earned his BA in Science and Conservation from the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Matt describes himself as an open-minded, adventurous, and diligent person. He also speaks Indonesian fluently and will visit Indonesia for an advanced language course sponsored by Fulbright. He believes that the Jemez Mountains in Northern New Mexico is the most beautiful place in the US that no one knows about.
Huong T.D. Nguyen Huong is a first year student from Vietnam. Her focus is on Modern Vietnam History. Her undergraduate was in History from the History Department of Vietnam National University, Hanoi. She describes herself as an independent, nationalistic and internationalist person. She likes traveling, listening to music and reading. She definitely believes that Hanoi is the best city to see in Vietnam.
Eric Viani Eric is a first year student from New Hampshire, U.S. His focus is on history and globalization in Indochina. His BA was in Philosophy from Trinity College. He describes himself as an inquisitive and eclectic person. His hobbies are watching national geographic documentaries and racquet sports. The White Mountains in New Hampshire and coastal Maine are the have-to-see places for Eric.
Widyasari Listyowulan Widya is a first year student from Indonesia. She is interested in literary works in Southeast Asia. She earned BAs in English Literature, Sanata Dharma University and Philosophy from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. She teaches Indonesian Language at Ohio University. She worked as a lecturer at Universitas Islam Indonesia before studying in the US. She believes that Jogjakarta is the best place to visit in Indonesia.
Rebekah Daro Minarcheck From Missouri, U.S., Bekah focuses on the anthropology of Rice Agriculture in Thailand. Her B.A was in Mass Media and Communications, with a minor in English from Missouri State University. She taught English in Thailand and worked as a sports reporter. Traveling, reading, making a mess, and making lists are her hobbies. She describes herself as a messy, flighty, achiever. Bekah received a BOREN fellowship in 2009 to conduct research in Indonesia. She is hoping to pursue a PhD. She said that the beaches of North Carolina are the coolest place to visit in the U.S.
Bruce Douglas Bruce works on the Diplomatic Relations of Democratic Kampuchea post-1979. His BA is International Studies, American University, DC. Currently, Bruce is serving as Assistant Residential Coordinator at Brown/Pickering Complex, Ohio University. Having learned Khmer for almost 2 years, Bruce speaks the language very well and has been able to travel to Cambodia several times. He wants to work with an NGO that has direct contact with the people it is serving and also still be able to have an influence on policy. He likes to read autobiographies in his spare time. With the beauty, diversity, food, and great public transportation, Bruce feels that San Francisco is one of the greatest places to visit.
Nurchayati Nurchayati Nurchayati is a first year student from Indonesia. Her focus is on sports in Indonesia. Prior to her study in the U.S, she worked as a permanent lecturer at Surabaya State University, Java, Indonesia. Her BA was in Psychology. Her hobby includes philately. She plans to work for a NGO and teach at a university in Indonesia. She thinks that Jogjakarta is the coolest place to see in Indonesia.
Khariroh Khariroh Khariroh is a first year student from Indonesia. Her focus is on Feminism and Islam in Indonesia. Prior to her studies at OU, she worked as a researcher in the Union of Pesantren and Community Development (P3M), Jakarta, a reporter for Jakarta News, FM, a program Assistant of Puan Amal Hayati (Women Crisis Center), and a Program Assistant of the Institute of Human Resources Development Nahdhatul Ulama (LAKPESDAM NU). She graduated from Paramadina University and The State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga, Jogjakarta, Indonesia.
Alexander Supartono Alexander is a first year student from Indonesia. He is working on Colonial Photography. Prior to his studies at OU, Alex worked as a lecturer at the Jakarta Art Institute. He earned his BA in philosophy at Driyarkara Institute of Philosophy, Indonesia. He wants to be a photo historian soon after he graduates from OU. He said that GARUDA, Jakarta and Taring Padi, Jogjakarta, are the coolest places to hang out in Indonesia.
Kurara Nakano Kurara is a first year student from Japan. Her focus is on Islamic Banking in Southeast Asia. Having learned Indonesian language for almost 1 and half years, she will visit Indonesia and Malaysia for the Malaysian Film and Media Summer Study Abroad Program.
Brian Arieska Pranata Brian is a second year student from Indonesia. His focus is on Telecommunication development and Human Geography in Indonesia. He has his BA in English Literature from Brawijaya University, Indonesia. Prior to OU, he worked as a supporting staff at Ministry of Education within the division of International Cooperation. He claims to be a workaholic person. His favorite hobby is bermain soccer. In the future, Brian will work for an International Organization. Brian says that the splendid sunrise at Bromo Mountain is the best thing to see in Indonesia.
Phirom Leng Phirom is a first year student from Cambodia. He will teach Khmer this coming fall 2009. His focus is on Private Higher Education in Cambodia. Phirom has a BA in Education from the Institute of Foreign Languages, Royal University of Phnom Penh. He worked as a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Languages in Cambodia for 3 years. Phirom hopes to continue his career at the Royal University after he receives his M.A. He said that Sihanoukville is the best place to visit in Cambodia.
Cesar Diaz Quintas Cesar Diaz is a first year student from East Timor. His focus is on Political Science in SEA. He works as a senior program officer in Timor Leste. He has a BA in management from Indonesia. He likes to play volleyball and he describes himself as an easy-going, friendly and cooperative person. His goal in life is to serve the people of his native country of Timor Leste.
Farina So Farina is a first year graduate student from Cambodia. Her focus is on women and oral history. She has a BA from National University of Management, majoring in Business Administration. Prior to her study at OU, she worked as a Project Leader for the Oral History Project at the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam). She wants to be a scholar of the Cham Muslim in Cambodia after her study at OU. She describes herself as a considerate, friendly, and thoughtful young woman. She said that beaches in Sihnoukville are the best places to visit in Cambodia.
Wesley Clarke Wesley’s focus is on history and archaeology of the proto-state period (1st millennium C.E.) in mainland Southeast Asia. His thesis is on the Dvaravati of Central Thailand. He earned his BA in anthropology and Archeology from Prescott College. He also has a MA from Marietta College. Currently, he is working as an archaeologist and environmental planner with the Ohio Department of Transportation. He is a member of the following organizations: Society for American Archaeology, Archaeological Institute of America, Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association, Ohio Archaeological Council, West Virginia Archaeological Society, Phi Kappa Phi.
Fitria Kurniasih Fitria is a second year student from Indonesia. Her focus is on the School of Nature in Indonesia. Prior to her study at OU, she worked for the Indonesian Ministry of National Education. She has her BA from Bogor Agricultural University. She is a friendly, active but moody person.
